Vendors, we’ve got you covered!!  BAOBOB is hosting the festival marketplace with a Kijani state of mind.  Kijani = Green in Swahili and is much more than a color.  It’s a shorthand for abundant, healthy, environmentally sound, and thriving.  We’re grateful for the synthesis with @hellaplants and @akoma market who have joined us in bringing the Kijani marketplace to life.

And, what’s more, vendors please note:  Youth Speaks has gone the full distance to support your Kijani all year long.  They have sponsored a ONE-YEAR Root level BAOBOB membership for the first 50 eligible vendors that apply.

More Green News

Why do we care so much about “going Green?”

Because when we think about equity and quality of life,  it’s got to be  clean water, clean air and and  health of the planet we walk on before everything.  Study after study reveal that communities hardest hit by economic disparity are often hardest hit with environimental negligence.  Black-owned businesses greening up their operations are important leaders in the ways we can reduce waste refuse toxins and take action against climate change to preserve our communities.

Along with our BAOBOB members Lola’s African Apparel, African American Arts and Culture Complex, One Presence Massage, Piikup, and Teranga, BAOBOB has done the work and is now recognized as Green by the California Green Business Network.  Eligible businesses can receive up to $1000 with Green recognition.  The application is easy and the ecological reward goes way beyond the dollars!

Racial Equity and Economic Justice

California Reinvestment Coalition‘s second annual Racial and Economic Justice cohort brought together 12 CBO founders and executive directors from around the state to unpack some bags at the intersection between racial equity and economic justice.   The cohort, including BAOBOB founder, YaVette Holts, focused on laying the groundwork for future policy development.   Cohort members are committed to an in-depth examination of systemic, organizational, and personal work required to identify and operate with a racial justice lens around economic justice issues specifically related to money and wealth in America.

CRC spearheads change at the policy level through legislative monitoring and advocacy.  CRC also recognizes changemakers in action.

ABOUT BAOBOB

BAOBOB is the acronym for Bay area Org of Black Owned Businesses. And that’s no accident.  We take pride in the natural connection between our name and the baobab tree.  One of the oldest species of trees on the planet, the baobab tree is indigenous to to the African content and commonly known as the “tree of life” because every part of the baobob tree nourishes the people around it…  the leaves, the fruit, even the roots and the trunk itself.  We are committed to making everything that we produce as useful to our community as the baobab tree is the world around it.
