The Plight for Black Bills
Money isn’t really green is it?
I believe it’s the color of whoever’s hands it passes through. It has the power to sustain, or destroy a community by how long it continues to circulate in that community. While many activists focus on racial and gender based rights, BAOBOB believes that economics is a key component to freedom, livelihood and access.
The root to many issues in the Black community can be related to a lack of resources, which in turn relates to a lack of wealth. Wealthy families can afford healthy food, the best schools, world renowned doctors and therapists, vacations, and homes! While money can’t buy you happiness it does contribute towards a better quality of life.
And isn’t there power and security in being able to pass the family bussiness down to your children? Knowing that it will continue to thrive in a community that will support it.
Over the past year BAOBOB has worked on a simple mission: create a directory / support system for all Black bussiness in the Bay Area. So that the community is aware of the Black biz that exists! This way Black bills can circulate in the Black community thus reaffirming a Black economy. Whites, Asians, Latinos all have an economy, why can’t we? It’s as simple as getting a latte from Red Bay coffee instead of Starbucks, but it takes a conscious effort. We have not perfected the process yet, but we are working hard at something we believe in. Something that a heavily gentrified Bay Area is begging for.
We hope you continue to support us along the way!
